2015 started on a high with a JMO concert at City Recital Hall, Angel Place on January 22 as part of the Sydney Festival. The performance was one of the highlights of the Orchestra’s career to date, performing in one of the country’s leading concert halls to a sold-out house with two amazing artists, Maria Schneider and Jef Neve. ABC recorded the entire event for broadcast and the first half of the concert, Jef Neve and the JMO has been broadcast via ABC Jazz is now available for streaming at the ABC Jazz website here. The 2nd half featuring Maria Schneider includes brand new unreleased works, so stay tuned for that broadcast date.
Other great things coming up in 2015 include concerts with US saxophonist Miguel Zenon and his quartet re-imagining Zenon’s Identities are Changeable CD at The Basement, Sydney on June 4, and at the Melbourne International Jazz Festival on June 5. Tickets for Sydney are available here and for the Melbourne Festival here.
Later in the year the Orchestra head into the studio in September to record a brand new program featuring trumpeter Scott Tinkler and composer Andy Fiddes and a national CD launch tour in October / November. and of course the long awaited National Big Band Composition Competition will again run in late 2015 with confirmed details to come shortly.
2015 is a challenging year as we continue to evolve as a small arts organisation with big dreams. We are actively seeking volunteer board members that have experience in the arts world that would be interested in contributing to our organisation as it continues to present world class jazz orchestral music created right here in Australia.
